The Macho Minute is about my dog Macho, a chihuahua I rescued in January of 2010. Macho was rescued from a house in Dearborn, MI where 100+ other Chihuahuas were found alive and another 150+ were found dead amongst garbage piled from floor to ceiling. Due to these living conditions, Macho is very timid at all times. I created the Macho Minute to share Macho's stories and progress, as well as my joy of rescuing a dog who needs extra love and care.

An Unpleasant Weekend!

It's safe to say that Macho didn't enjoy his weekend too much! On Thursday I put a little spaghetti sauce mixed in with his food, and lets just say it was a natural laxative for Macho! I came home from work on Friday to Macho looking as normal as usual, but with an unpleasant surprise in the house. That night, it seemed to only be worse. He began to throw up too, which was then all over my comforter, bed sheets, and bedroom floor. I felt terrible, especially because it's my own fault for giving him a little human food! On Saturday and Sunday he was feeling better but was sleeping a lot. I think he might have been dehydrated, so I started mixing food with his water so he would get some back into his system.

By Sunday night he was getting a little antsy. He was laying in funny positions (including using my ball of yarn as a pillow), and then would squirm around a lot. At one point he moved around so much that he got stuck under the blanket that we lay on "his spot" of the couch so it's not covered in hair. He found his way out eventually, and I had to snap a picture. I didn't get it in the shot, but his tail was wagging ever so slightly while this was going on. Almost like it was a game!

We hope Macho is feeling much better. We get a little human food every now & again, but after hearing about Macho's weekend, we might pass next time.

I sure hope Macho is feeling better.

Was the spaghetti sauce homemade or in a jar?

I am asking because if it was store bought the ingredients could have been extremely dangerous for him.

Dogs cannot have garlic or onion and most commercial spaghetti sauces have those ingredients in them.

If you made yours from scratch with no garlic or onions you should be ok.

If he still isn't well and you bought the spaghetti sauce from a store/restaurant I would call the vet.

Don't feel bad, it happens to all of us! I manage to get into just about everything and have had many an upset tummy. I am a big fan of pizza and if my mom doesn't watch me like a hawk, I will grab some. The onion and garlic thing is true, but mostly in their raw form - there's not much in bottled sauce so I think he will be fine.

When I get sick, my mom puts me on a white rice and broiled chicken diet. Sometimes, she adds a little chicken stock to keep me hydrated. If things aren't back to normal or Macho seems worse after 24 hours give your vet a call.

It is always scary when they get sick, but most dogs bounce back pretty quickly from tummy troubles.

Thanks for your comments everyone! Macho is feeling better, but I'm going to see how he is tonight and how his stool looked. Unfortunately I wasn't home when he went to the bathroom and Nick cleaned it up. He said it looked a little weird, but nothing too out of the ordinary. He seems fine, which I think is a good sign!

The sauce was homemade. Just tomato paste and heavy cream. Although, I do think I put in some garlic powder, but I'm not sure if that would make him be like this? I didn't know that dogs can't have onion or garlic, so that is good to know! I think Macho's only symptom was the diarrhea. I think the vomiting came from him trying to eat it. While I was cleaning it up, I caught him trying to eat a little bit. I really don't understand how he wants to eat it! But I think that made him throw up because only a few minutes later the vomiting began.

My sister's dog often gets the upset stomach and she makes the rice diet. I looked it up online to see if I could find some alternatives as I only had brown rice. I made it with oatmeal and chicken, and then I also mixed water into it to try to get him more dehydrated.

Thanks again for all of your help :)

I am sooo hoping that Macho is feeling better today and thank you for the update!

I am glad to hear that the sauce was homemade but YES, onions and garlic are extremely dangerous for dogs and cats!

If you call the vet please let us know what he/she says.

((((hugs)))) to Macho!

I make my own dogfood from a vet's cookbook and it contains fresh garlic, which I am told is a natural flea and insect repellent for dogs. They react fine to it. When you own dogs long enough you come upon things like this. He may have even eaten something outside...grass, certain weeds that can cause stomach upset. So if he's fine now I wouldn't worry.
